The chef night: a private chef in Lake George for one night of the week
Most Lake George rental groups book a chef for one night, not seven. The chef plans the menu with you before the trip, shops for it, cooks in the rental kitchen, serves on the deck or at the big table, and cleans up afterward. The rest of the week you grill, order pizza and eat out in the village.
Which night? Not the first. People arrive at different times, someone's stuck on the Northway, and nobody knows where the serving spoons are yet. Not the last night either, when half the house is packing. Book the middle of the week, once everyone has settled in and the group has enough sun behind them to sit still for three courses.
The exception is a big group arriving together after a long drive from New Jersey, Connecticut or the city. For them, an arrival-night dinner waiting at the house is a strong start to the week. Our Airbnb and lake house chef page covers arrival dinners and multi-night bookings.
Bringing kids? Ask for an early, simple kids' dinner served first, so the adults get the real meal at a real pace once the little ones are settled in front of a movie. Many chefs will plan two menus if you ask.
What a private chef needs from a Lake George rental kitchen
Rental kitchens on the lake run from fully equipped to three warped pans and a knife that couldn't cut butter. Most chefs bring their own knives and the pans they rely on, but they still need to know what they're walking into. Send the listing link or a few kitchen photos, and mention:
- The oven, burner count and whether the grill has propane
- How many plates, glasses and chairs the house has versus your headcount
- Whether there's a dishwasher
- Directions past the GPS: steep driveways, camp roads, parking
That last one matters more here than anywhere else in the region. A camp at the end of a narrow private road can add real time to a chef's setup. One more favor: clear a shelf in the fridge before the chef arrives. A house of twelve on day four of a lake week usually has no room left for anyone's groceries.
Boat days and Fourth of July on Lake George
On a boat day, nobody wants to cook at 7 p.m. Ask your chef whether they'll pack a boat lunch: grain salads, cold roast chicken, good sandwiches, cut fruit, things that hold in a cooler. Then dinner is waiting when you tie up, sunburned and starving. A boat day followed by a chef dinner is the best day of most rental weeks. If the forecast turns, the dinner still happens. Just let the chef know whether you'll eat on the deck or move everything inside.
Fourth of July is one of the busiest weeks of the summer, and the fireworks over the lake set the schedule. Plan dinner early enough that everyone eats, then heads to the dock or the shore at Shepard Park with dessert in hand. Fourth of July week books before anything else on the calendar, so reach out as soon as the rental is confirmed.
Celebrating something on the lake? A bachelorette party at Lake George with a chef dinner and a next-morning brunch is one of the most popular ways to use a rental house.
Americade week and fall foliage weekends: private dinners off-peak
Americade brings thousands of motorcycles to Lake George every June, and the village's restaurants fill up to match. If you're in town that week, riding or not, a private dinner at your rental is a calmer way to eat.
Fall is the season people underrate. September and October weekends bring cooler nights, changing leaves along the shoreline and far fewer crowds. Spend the day driving up Prospect Mountain or walking the village, then come back to braised short ribs, squash, apples and a fire. Chefs usually have more open dates in fall than in July, and the menus suit the weather better.

Private chef service in Bolton Landing, Diamond Point, Hague and Lake Luzerne
We cover the whole lake and the towns around it. Bolton Landing, home to The Sagamore and some of the largest lake houses, is on the list too, though it's a longer drive, so give your chef extra notice. Diamond Point sits between the village and Bolton, with rentals right on the water. Hague, up at the quieter north end, is a longer drive, so give your chef extra notice and expect travel to factor into the quote. Lake Luzerne, a short drive southwest on its own smaller lake, is covered too.
At the south end, Queensbury and Glens Falls are home base for a lot of year-round lake people. See our page for a private chef in Queensbury.
