Summer lake dinners with a private chef at Crystal Lake and Burden Lake
Averill Park is a hamlet in the Town of Sand Lake, and from June to Labor Day life here runs on lake time. Crystal Lake and Burden Lake are ringed with year-round houses and summer camps, some of them in the same family for generations, and the big dinners happen on the deck: the Fourth of July, a reunion week, the night the cousins finally all arrive.
That's exactly when a host gets stuck at the stove. A private chef takes the cooking off your hands so you can stay on the dock until the light goes. Most bookings include menu planning, shopping, cooking, serving and cleanup, though you'll confirm the details with your chef.
Lake menus should be simple and generous. Our opinion: build the main course around the grill, add sweet corn and a couple of big salads in August, and make dessert something that waits happily in the fridge. Then it doesn't matter if the boat comes in forty minutes late. Our private dinner party page covers family-style versus plated service.
What a private chef needs from an Averill Park camp kitchen
A camp that's been in the family since the 1970s is a wonderful place to eat and a tricky place to cook. One oven of uncertain temperature, a small fridge already full of drinks, three feet of counter: a chef can work with all of it, but only if they know ahead of time.
When you inquire, send a few photos and answer three questions:
- How many burners and ovens work, and does the oven run true?
- Is there fridge space for the chef's ingredients, or should they bring coolers?
- Is there a grill, and where is it relative to the kitchen?
With that, the chef plans a menu for the kitchen you have, with more done ahead and less juggled at the last minute. Renting a lake house rather than owning one? Our Airbnb and lake house chef page covers what to ask the host before you book.
Holiday dinners and winter cooking classes in Averill Park
After Labor Day the camps close up and Sand Lake turns quiet. The year-round households along Route 43 and the back roads take over, and the reasons to book a chef change with the season: Thanksgiving with the whole family, a Christmas Eve dinner, New Year's with friends who'd rather not drive the dark country roads to a restaurant and back.
A holiday dinner at home with a chef cooking means the host gets the same evening as everyone else. Book early: holiday dates fill across the region well before the snow does.
Winter is also the best season for a private cooking class. A snowy Saturday, a few friends around the kitchen island, a chef teaching a braise or fresh pasta, and then everyone sits down to eat what they made. It's a better use of a February night than another movie.
